Construction of a $180 million pediatric addition at UMMC is climbing higher as a seven-story tower is taking shape this fall. The progress comes as programs such as pediatric critical care have record numbers of specialists caring for the state’s ill and injured children.

UMMC’s addiction program has reached a milestone. New faculty member Dr. Saurabh Bhardwaj, an addiction psychiatrist, is the Medical Center’s first provider to offer medication-assisted treatment, or MAT, for those coping with opioid use disorder.

Wearable technologies let individuals monitor their health. Now, an app from a popular smartwatch manufacturer will alert wearers if they have common yet dangerous heart arrhythmia. This could be a helpful tool, but doesn’t replace traditional electrocardiography, says a UMMC expert.
